| Action Research in Nomads in Residence |
A parasite by Bik Van der Pol and Korteknie Stuhlmacher, commissioned by Beyond.
Nomads in Residence is two things: a space and a project, a condition for the production of content. Designed as a mobile live-workspace, this parasite designed by Rotterdam based artists Bik Van der Pol serves as a tool for an all year exploration project of one of the core dilemmas of living in a new housing estate, the nomadic versus the residential.
Artistic temporary interventions
"Nomads in Residence" hosts a programme of Action Research projects and temporary interventions by artists whereby 'Leidsche Rijn Now' is the focal point; Leidsche Rijn as an area with a community under construction, with a continuously changing habitat. Artists research the emergence of formal social networks, of cityness and of the new 21st community.
In 2004 Nomads in Residence hosted among others Apolonija Sustersic (1965, lives and works in Amsterdam, Stockholm and Ljubljana). Apolonija Sustersic tested "Nomads in Residence" 'hybrid' potential for living and working in a simultaneously private and public domain. The parasite played host to a cinema for children, while at the same time serving as artist's studio, living room, and reception room.

| Expert meeting |
For Sustersic the children's cinema is a way of making the residence accessible to the public and, at the same time, to investigate whether such a facility can fulfil the needs of children and/or parents. Sustersic is interested in how city dwellers experience their surroundings, in this case in the living environment of mothers with young children. Accordingly Sustersic invited mothers in particular to accompany their children to the cinema in order to exchange views with them on living in Leidsche Rijn. Furthermore Sustersic received weekly guests, experts in fields varying from urban development to gender issues.
