The Merchant's House Garden

A new artistic design for a medieval garden

A Garden in reconstruction

Tracy Mackennas and Edwin Janssen´s proposal to reactivate the old garden is one part of three projects, which were selected in a competition in Kirkcaldy/Scotland. The artists say in their concept:

"Our design for the garden creates a space that has various functions and serves different needs. The enclosed garden will be an environment incorporating social space with intimate, private space in contrast to its immediate urban surroundings.

Edwin Janssen und Lesley Woodbridge diskuieren das Projekt
The most significant starting point for the initial design is the model of a mediaeval garden. The combination of social interaction, contemplation and food production form the basis of our approach. Our aim is to make a contemporary garden that brings people together through a series of organised events whilst also offering the possibilty of quiet, reflective space. It will symbolically produce food through fruit trees, herbs and a mini vegetable garden (a kitchen garden), linking it to one of its historical functions.

The garden will be a social space that hosts a variety of activities such as a film screening, a performance or an open-air concert through an annual summer art programme. Several of the invited artists will come from countries with a historical trade link with Kirkcaldy.
