Clothing is a very important appliance to differ from your fellow everyday. In face of gradually disintegration of dressing rules, the importance of clothing as a visual self-expression is unmodified significant. Wear deals with surfaces, which can express desires as well as stylish or social conventions. The G:Jacket can express a sort of identity and differ the dwellers of Gröpelingen at the same time. Everybody can wear the G:Jacket. It serves, despite of multicultural variety, to develop an idea of community. On this note the G:Jacket is a sculptural, substantial principle, which should have a place in the consciousness and memory of the people of Gröpelingen. An object like a virus The G:Jacket is a sculpture, not statical but an omnipresent object with the uncalculable characteristics of a virus. A jury, which decided about a public-art-competition, followed this idea in 2001. Since then this project is growing; for the time being as an aesthetic and sociological approach. Questionnaire in step 1 In the first stage (2001 - 2003) the artists developed a questionnaire, which approx. 300 persons filled out. They carried out soundings of public opinion and presented the project on diverse occasions. Therefore an audiovisual CD and a flipbook have been published and within the scope of the exhibition "No Man Is An Island" the results have been presented in 2003. Workshop of communication in step 2 In the second stage, which set in with the preparations of production, at the beginning of 2005, a workshop of communication will be established in Gröpelingen. The G:Jacket will be produced and distributed by assistents coming from this area. Sander/Claassen-Schmal organise production, presentations, events and public relation as co-ordinators. The G:jacket will be available in three sizes and also as a do-it-yourself-sewing-set at a cheap rate. Opposite to normal art-works the G:Jacket is no unicate; in fact the production and distribution will be an aspect of identity for the dwellers. In the second stage more emails, ideas, projects and products will come into existance, connected to the G:Jacket. The G:Jacket is meant to be a project of communication; as much as possible people should join in. Different audiences should be announced to by different partners participating, as for example the initiative for employment (BRAS), the Bremen Company of Urban Development (Bremische Gesellschaft für Stadtentwicklung) and the Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst (GAK).
